Tricolor makes satellite Internet accessible

Tricolor keeps on making high-speed satellite Internet accessible to Russians. In course of 2017 and 2018 the total number of subscribers for the service in B2C segment in the country has increased by 8.2 thousand customers, the half of all new connections (48 %) accounts for Tricolor[1]. Today already 5 thousand customers of the operator have the satellite Internet access. The new proposal of connecting to the service is also intended to stimulate further development of the market for satellite Internet in Russia.

Since 29 April Tricolor jointly with the satellite Internet operator Eutelsat Networks has been offering new terms of access to the «Satellite Internet» service for individuals: the line of unlimited plans has been updated, also the cost of the receiving equipment package has been reduced 4 times since the launch of the project in September 2016. The customers of the operator have access to three unlimited plans: 10 Mbps (1990 rubles/month), 20 Mbps (3390 rubles/month), 40 Mbps (5490 rubles/month). Upon connection prior to 31 July 2019 the customers will be able to purchase equipment for a special price — 9,990 rubles. The new proposal facilitates the solution of the main problem impeding the rate of the development of the satellite Internet market in Russia, i.e. a high threshold for entry of potential users.

Individuals comprise 95 % of all connections to Tricolor’s satellite Internet. The service is in the highest demand with the two types of customers. The first are owners of suburban houses in megalopolis suburbs with income level higher than average, who have got accustomed to the high level of service and do not want to forgo it during campouts. The second are people living in places where the only option of Internet connection is through a satellite: in private housing estates of Krasnodar Krai and in the Caucasus, and also in northern regions of Russia (Murmansk Region, Karelia, Arkhangelsk Region, Republic of Komi, Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug). Moscow Region is the leader in connections.

«Before 2016 the market for satellite Internet consisted mostly of connections in B2B segment in Siberia and the Far East. Tricolor decidedly changes this concept, making the service more accessible for individuals in the European part of Russia. We know that many of our digital TV subscribers have no access to cable BBA and live in areas with weak coverage by 3G and 4G networks. Tricolor breaks the stereotype that “satellite Internet is something very expensive and slow” and provides an opportunity to get high-speed Internet at an affordable price”, says Daniil Nirman, Area Manager of Tricolor’s “Satellite Internet”.

“Satellite Internet in Russia is now one of the fastest and at the same time most accessible in the world. Express AMU1 satellite has made it possible to secure the rate of Internet access up to 40 Mbps, which often exceeds the real data transmission rate in 3G/4G cellular networks. Due to our strategic partnership with Tricolor, millions of Russians have learned about the possibility to solve the problem of internet access in the country, cottage, or suburban house, and thousands have already solved it”, says Aleksandr Krasovsky, General Director of Eutelsat Networks.

In course of two years and a half the operator has covered 13 % of the satellite Internet market in Russia. According to the company’s estimates, up to 80 % of potential customers are within the base of customers of Tricolor’s digital television. The operator will keep on working on enhancing the accessibility of the service for Russians.
