«Tricolor TV» has connected the 7-millionth HDTV subscriber

The largest Russian Pay TV operator «Tricolor TV» has announced the connection of the 7-millionth subscriber. Therefore, the percentage of subscriber homes connected to high definition television has exceeded 59 % of the whole subscriber database, that is about a half of all HDTV subscribers in the Russian Federation.

Since January 1, 2016 the number of operator’s subscribers has increased by 400 thousand HDTV subscribers: from 6.6 million to 7 million. The company plans to change over all its MPEG-2 subscribers to HDTV before 2017.

Currently, 100% of new connections to «Tricolor TV» belong to HDTV subscribers. A significant percentage of the growth of the database belongs to participants to the initiative involving replacement of outdated equipment (MPEG-2) with HDTV-receivers (MPEG-4); such replacement was initiated by the operator in cooperation with its strategic partners.

More diverse content of better quality is the main advantage of the changeover to a new broadcast format. Instead of 52 SD TV channels, subscribers of the main service («Edinyi» package) get 231 TV and radio channels available, including 30 high definition television channels*. For example, at the end of January «Tricolor TV» has improved the «Edinyi» service with new sports HDTV channels: «Match! Igra» and «Match! Arena».

Changeover to MPEG-4 and HD is a predictable stage of evolutionary development of the pay TV market. The number of MPEG-2 TV channels is strongly decreased. This format is essentially obsolete. Several hundreds of HDTV channels are available worldwide. We make our best efforts to provide the opportunity to evaluate the new level of TV viewing stipulated by the laws of the Russian Federation to all our subscribers. In accordance with the Order of the Ministry of Communications «On approving the Requirements to the quality of sound and (or) image of mandatory public-access TV channels and (or) radio channels» dd. September 1, 2015 operators are obliged to broadcast digital signals of the first and the second multiplexes at least in MPEG-4 quality.
